Message from the Headmistress

The sapling planted by a visionary has grown into a huge oak tree- yes, over a span of 10 decades, St. Xaviers High School & Jr. College, with its humble beginning has become one of the premier institutions of Vile Parle. Hundreds and thousands of Xavierites till date, are spread all over the country and the globe as successful professionals, holding prestigious positions in their own fields of work.

What makes St. Xaviers different from other schools? Apart from its majestic building, science labs, computer labs, library, huge play grounds- there is something else which makes St. Xaviers somewhat special. It caters to the needs of the taught, and fosters human qualities in them. It does not believe in imparting ‘knowledge’ merely as ‘information’ but insists on giving value based education, which the world needs today. ‘Character building, and to be men for others’ are the objectives of this school. Having an educated head is important, but more important is to have an educated heart. Hence Xaviers makes sure that we do not produce ‘educated barbarians’, but physically, mentally, ethically and morally sound young men who cherish such values as discipline, honesty, compassion, humility, conviction and courage.

The school is not new to me. It has been my raison d’etre for the last 28 years- including the last 6 years as Principal. This period has been a journey of great learning for me. As they say, One who dares to teach must never cease to learn, I have learnt not only from my seniors and colleagues, but also from my students and parents, through continuous interactions. I also have the advantage of having worked closely with my illustrious predecessors. I am committed not only to maintain the impeccable image and highest standards, but also to carry them forward to new heights.

For me, Education does not mean providing answers, it means equipping the pupil with the means to find the answers for himself and within himself. Education empowers students to discover themselves- as people. Within each student is a doctor, an engineer, a teacher, a social activist, a sports person, an environmentalist, a poet, an author or an economist. The teachers support them in channelizing resources vis- a- vis their dreams thus, sustainably generating civilized and productive human capital for serving our motherland and in line with the Xavier’s motto ‘Truth, Duty & Charity.’

I am also fortunate to have an experienced and committed team, which has brought the school to its present stature. I, along with my team of silent workers and dedicated faculty, intend to build on this strong foundation and raise the standards in all spheres, to the zenith. My aim is not only to be an able administrator but also to be a friend, philosopher and guide to students- one whom they can count on and trust at all the times. I assure you that my doors will always be open to the students and their parents and the alumni for any suggestion or guidance.

Congratulations dear Ex- students on the formation of the Alumni association. I’m sure your motto and mission would be “LET’S MAKE A DIFFERENCE”.

I’m reminded of the words of Mr. N.R. Narayana Murthy,

‘When, one day, you have made your mark on the world, remember that, in the ultimate analysis, we are all mere temporary custodians of the wealth we generate, whether it be financial, intellectual, or emotional. The best use of all your wealth is to share it with those less fortunate.’

I believe that we have all at some time eaten the fruits from trees that we did not plant. In the fullness of time, when it is our turn to give, it behooves us in turn to plant gardens that we may never eat the fruit of, which will largely benefit generations to come. I believe this is our sacred responsibility, one that I hope you will shoulder in time.

It’s a pleasure seeing so many of you at the venue, all ready to share your wealth earned. Many have been a mere lump of coal who have done well under the pressure of the school to become a diamond.

Let each member of the association believe that, ‘I am only one, but still I am one and unique. I cannot do everything but I can do something. And because I cannot do everything, I will not refuse to do something that I can do.’

I am confident that the members of the alumni association will always be a beacon of light guiding the destiny of many students. You dear Ex- students are our letters of recommendation, the testimonials in whatever you do in society.

Let’s join our hands together to help every Xavierite be encouraged to channelize their potential in the pursuit of excellence in a holistic & student centered environment.

All the very best in all your future endeavours.

Ms. Vera Fernandes
